Water quality is a measure of the condition of water in regards to chemical, physical, and radiological conditions. Water quality standards have to do with the health of ecosystems, safety of human contact, and drinking water. The CGS has a long history of researching the geologic conditions that affect water quality. After the 2015 Gold King Mine waste water spill, the water quality of the Animas River was very poor. Water from in the area surrounding the Animas River was unsafe to use for several months following the incident.
