The Devonian is a geologic time period that spans 60 million years, from 419.2 million years ago to 358.9 million years ago. This period is named after Devon, England, though its diversity of fish earned it the nickname “Age of Fish”. It was during this time that the first finned bony fish appeared and when the ancestors of all four-limbed vertebrates began adapting to walking on land. The Devonian also saw the first ammonites, though all trilobites were killed off during the Late Devonian extinction, which started 375 million years ago.
